Data center roles and responsibilities

Also known as Data Center or Data Processing Center. Here they are stored and distributed to authorized personnel or processes for administration. Data Centers play a fundamental role in the proper functioning of different services we consume every day, such as internet, telecommunications, transport, banks, security systems, health and many more. Therefore, the servers on which they are hosted must be kept in an optimal operating environment.

Data Centers must have some basic elements to have a good functioning.

Network infrastructure

The Data Center operator is a fundamental element of the IT department in any company. Therefore, it is essential that it be configured to offer services in a flexible and dynamic way. Two essential characteristics of a Data Center are scalability and flexibility. These are necessary for almost all business activities currently performed on the Internet. Therefore, the Data Centers projects must be designed with an appropriate infrastructure to support all the services and systems of the company, in such a way that it allows the perfect operation of the center and foresees its future growth through an adaptation to emerging technologies.

The main risks that can affect the operation of a Data Center are unexpected power outages, power ups and downs and electrical pollution, which affect the availability of users and generate millions of losses to companies. All of them are possible to avoid or at least control, this in order to look for a 24/7 operation.

Physical security

The protection of the Data Center is also very important, understanding that any eventuality can cause a major problem for the company and its customers. Above all, in Chile where there is much seismic activity and natural phenomena difficult to control. There are several guidelines and good practices that should be considered in the process of designing and implementing the solution:

  • Guarantee the physical care of the place.
  • Install cells and cabinets.
  • Install access control systems.
  • Create a sourcing process.
  • Install security alarm.
  • Organize a human monitoring team.

Operating without interruption is a fundamental need in data centers. So it becomes very important to have generators to face an eventual power outage. In the event of a failure in the electricity grid, these devices begin their operation by delivering load to the system and allowing long periods of electrical autonomy. Other equipment is the UPS systems, which assume the load of the equipment while the generating sets complete their cycle to supply power, avoiding power outages during changes and regulating the voltage, among other advantages.
